“Creative expression has been both a soothing balm and a lifesaving elixir in recent years (and likely throughout my life). Poetry and dance/movement are my mediums, the ways that I make and express art in the world. When I can't find words, often the rest of my body communicates through movement, and when I'm stuck and have a hard time moving my body, sometimes words (written or spoken) are the portal. I occasionally pick up the ukulele or sing. Play is at the center of my creative expression and the antidote (balance?) to my perfectionist (Virgo rising) part.”

No, this isn’t an excerpt from my bio or some blog or podcast episode.

It is an excerpt from an email response to a local art therapist when she asked me to share a bit more about what I’m wanting help with and what has worked in the past.

Why am I sharing it with you right now?

Because I want you to know some of my reasons why.

Why poetry?

Why dance and movement?

Why are these at the center of my offerings for you? (see excerpt above)

The soothing balms and elixirs I’ve dosed on for several years are the very gifts I offer to you now.

Do I think they will work for you exactly the way they worked for me?

Nah.

Am I here to help “perfect” your poetic or dancing form?

Oh fuck no (again, see the excerpt above about my perfectionist part)

Am I here to hold space for your creative exploration, for your “AHA” moments, for the moments when you’re in the middle of a poetry workshop and you cautiously and curiously state,

“I think… I might be a poet!”

and I respond with “You are a poet!”

Am I here for those moments?

Oh fuck YES!

Am I here for the year-from-now-you who shows up to Danceground for the umpteenth time even though the thought of dancing used to be terrifying to you… and shares out loud about an emotional release and breakthrough you had while responding to the guided prompts that day?

Yes, yes, yes!

Am I here for the goofy and playful moments we share on screen at any of the zoom sessions, from creative flow work to poetry to Danceground?

Of course!

I’m here for laughter and tears, for the mundane, mysterious, and magical moments when we root in creative alchemy and come home to our gifts… each in our own time and at our own pace.

I’m here for alchemy emerging from unexpected and unlikely places.

We still have one online Danceground session and one poetry workshop left this month before we do it all again in December.

Our theme this month is 🌬️ reciprocity 🌳, in honor of the importance of reciprocal relationships. When we breathe out carbon dioxide, which trees absorb and they in turn produce oxygen, which sustains human life... we are in reciprocal relationship. 

During a time of year where we are called to reflect on and give thanks for the things we are grateful for, we will explore how to live in reciprocal relationship with other humans and with the land.
